MAHISHASURMARDINI UTSAV & WHAT IS TO BE DONE WHILE TAKING DARSHAN - AS TOLD BY P. P. BAPU

Discourse by Param Poojya Aniruddha Bapu on 23th July 2009

On the Thursday of 23rd July 2009, Param Poojya Aniruddha Bapu delivered His discourse as usual again at New English High School ground at Bandra East, Mumbai.

During His discourse, Bapu throughout described His Mother, Goddess Mahishasurmardini who would manifest Herself in form of an idol at Shree Kshetra Gurukshetram.

Goddess Mahishasurmardini can be described as Amit-Prabha i.e. One who extends beyond the universe.

The above paragraph from Shubhankar Stotra describes the various states of Goddess Mahishasurmardini. At the time of sunrise She appears like a child. At afternoon She appears like a youngster (Tarun). But at the evening She appears calm, composed, and mature like an old woman.

Bapu said even though Her external appearance is extremely angry, always laden with weapons, but still Her love for Her sons and daughters is extremely high. Out of this love Goddess Mahishasurmardini i.e. Goddess Gayatri (Another form of the same Goddess) ordered Her son Lord Parmatma, Lord Mahashesh and Her daughter Goddess Alhadini to expand and develop this universe. She asked Lord Parmatma; to take forms of Lord Mahavishnu, Lord Brahma and Lord Paramshiv and Goddess Alhadini was asked to take form of Goddess Mahalaxmi, Goddess Saraswati and Goddess Parvati. Finally the pairs of Lord Mahavishnu - Goddess Mahalaxmi, Lord Brahma - Goddess Saraswati and Lord Paramshiv - Goddess Parvati became heavily functional for their children (the components of the entire universe). Goddess Mahishasurmardini observed that these three pairs are getting extremely overworked while serving this universe. So to give them respite and rest, Goddess Mahishasurmardini with help of Lord Kamdev initiated the spousal feelings in the minds of these pairs and settled them. Finally these pairs became functional as Spousal pairs. This helped the enhancement of feeling of motherhood in the minds of all the three forms of Goddess Alhadini.

Now further they thought that this Admimata does so much for us and Her children then, what like her can we do for our children. So from this they started a Tapascharya so that their earthly human children could experience the love of this Adimata that these three forms of Lord Parmatma and Goddess Alhadini were experiencing. Impressed with their Tapascharya Goddess Adimata appeared Herself before the divine spousal pairs and gave them blessing that whenever they would remember Her, She would manifest Herself instantly. So further, the divine parts demanded that not only us but also when our earthly children remember You, You should manifest Yourself instantly for them. So Goddess Adimata put a condition for Her manifestation, that the bhakti, belief of these humans should be at par with You all and moreover this bhakti and belief of their’s should be continuous process and not a spurt of a moment. The Goddess (forms of Goddess Alhadini) were having a complete idea, that this was not possible, as their human children had become habitual to abusing their freedom (Karma Swatantrya) that was extended to them. So out of this realization and their sheer love towards their humanly children, they requested Goddess Adimata to grant some concessions to the humans even if it meant taking back the blessing given to the divine pairs.

So finally the loving mother, Goddess Adimata relented and gave a rider to the human in the earlier given blessing and said that atleast during the holy month of Shravan whoever would remember Me, You (forms of Goddess Alhadini) or My Sons (forms of Lord Parmatma) with extreme love, I would definitely bless them.

So the holy month of Shravan derives its name from ‘Shravan Bhakti’ meaning Bhakti performed by listening Lord’s name. As a result we can see the idol of the Goddess Mahishasurmardini bearing a conch in one on Her 18 hands and Her head (ear) tilted towards this conch. The conch acts as a receiving station of the Goddess to listen to the chantings of the bhaktas. This is the exact reason why the Aniruddha Upasana Trust organizes the chanting of Ghorkashta Udharan Stotra during the month of Sharavan. So from now on, this festival of Goddess Mahishasurmardini would be celebrated every year, during the same period and would continue for another 2500 years till the Lord Parmatma reappears on the earth to finally destroy it and give it a rebirth.

The details of the schedule of Vajra-Mandal Pujanam of this festival are as follows:

1) Param Poojya Aniruddha Bapu, Param Poojya Nandai and Param Poojya Suchitdada Themselves, together would perform the pujan on Day 1 i.e. 9th August 2009.
2) Param Poojya Samirdada would perform the pujan on Day 2 i.e. 10th August 2009.
3) Respected Swapnilsinh would perform the pujan on Day 3 i.e. 11th August 2009.
4) Respected Paurassinh would perform the pujan on Day 4 i.e. 12th August 2009.
5) Saddya Pipadada, Shri. Appasaheb Dabholkar would perform the pujan on Day 5 i.e. 13th August 2009.
6) Respected Paurassinh would again perform the pujan on Day 6 i.e. 14th August 2009.
7) Respected Swapnilsinh again would perform the pujan on Day 7 i.e. 15th August 2009.
8) Param Poojya Samirdada again would perform the pujan on Day 8 i.e. 16th August 2009.
9) Param Poojya Bapu, Param Poojya Nandai, Param Poojya Suchitdada Themselves, together would perform the pujan on Day 9 i.e. 17th August 2009.

These pujans would be termed as Vajra-Mandal Pujanam and would be performed on the basis of three holy texts namely, Tripura Rahasyam, Matru-Vatsalya-Vindanam, and Durga-Rahasya. The limitations that the Adimata has imposed on Parmatma Trio (Lord Parmatma, Lord Mahashesh and Goddess Alhadini) are called Vajra- Mandal. Shree Yantra (The holy copper plate to which we offer pujan on the Dhantrayodashi Day) is the example of Vajra-Mandal. Lord Parshuram in the presence of Lord Dattatrey first developed this Vajra-Mandal Pujanam. Lord Ram, Lord Lakshman and Goddess Seeta performed the first ever Vajra-Mandal Pujanam of this universe. This pujan was presided over by Lord Hanuman as its Acharya who is one of the forms of Lord Dattatrey. This pujan has 24 parts (Avahanam, Asanam, Padyam, Arghyam, Achamaniam, Snaniyam, Panchamrut-Snanam, Shudhodaka-Snanam, Vastram, Gandham, Akshatanam, Saubhagya-Dravyam, Pushpani, Dhupam, Deepam, Naivedyam, Achamaniam, Sinduram, Kumkumam, Bhushanani, Awahanam Mantram, Mangalya-Sutram, Phalani, Tambulam, Dakshina, Nirajanam and Namaskaram) and 2 sub-parts (Narikel Balidanam, Sura).

So during this period of Mahishasurmardini Utsav the pujan of all these 26 subparts would be performed from 11.00 to 13.30 - 13.45 hrs. During this period darshan would be stopped. The darshan would be made available before and after this period.

648 Manibhadra Kankans would be offered throughout the festival
. (Bangles of Goddess Renuka, Mother of Lord Parshuram). Manibhadra Kankan has a story associated with it. Lord Parshuram was sitting in extremely grief over the death of His Mother Renuka when Lord Dattatrey appeared before Lord Parshuram. Lord Parshuram requested Lord Dattatrey to show Him his mother atleast once to which Lord Dattatrey agreed, but put a condition that Lord Parshuram will not touch Her as she had gone beyond 4th dimension. When Renuka appeared Lord Parshuram could not control Himself and went ahead to kiss His Mother. But because of the pre-condition by Lord Dattatrey, as Lord Parshuram kissed His mother she went back into the earth (crust) and only Her bangle was left with Lord Parshuram. Out of this grief Lord Parshuram began a very stern tapascharya, which lasted over more than 1000 years (from times of Ramayan to the times of Mahabharat). Finally Lord Parshuram offered this bangle to Goddess Adimata. The Manibhadra Kankan that P. P. Bapu would offer during the festival would represent the same kankan described in this story. The kankans would also be put up for sale, which the devotees can buy.

Short Gist of Activities to be Carried in the Festivals (For Entire Details Please Refer Masik Krupasindhu)

108 Divya Vastrams would be offered daily during the festival. The hymn of "Om Namaschandikayey" would be inscribed on every cloth.

The water used during the pujan would be from Panch-Ganga and Godavari.

Madhuparka (a mixture of one bowl of curd, 3 bowls of milk, 3 spoonfuls of ghee, 1 spoonful of honey and 1 spoonful of sugar) would be offered to the Goddess Mahishasurmardini thrice a day after the breakfast, lunch and dinner offerings. Bhavsura (a liquid mixture containing coconut water with a tinge of ginger juice) would also be offered to the Goddess Mahishasurmardini.

P. P. Bapu further said that the ritual of offering liquor and meat to any Goddess is totally wrong. In one of the sub-parts of Vajra-Mandal Pujanam i.e. Narikel Bali a coconut would be sacrificed for the Goddess as an offering. Here this coconut sacrifice signifies that every human being should kill the animals in his life (bad habits and thoughts). The Goddess never expects sacrifice of animals like hens, cocks, goats, buffaloes, etc or even humans (Nar-Bali).

Everyday at 9 pm ‘Shree Chandika-Mangal’ would be recited. At that time ‘Datta-Mangal-Chandika-Stotra’ would be recited. During this recitation some volunteers would shower flowers on the Goddess and after the recitation finishes the same volunteers would offer Lotangan. Then these volunteers would perform aaucktion of Goddess Mahishasurmardini, Goddess Anusaya Mata and Lord Dattaguru with the Shwant Rangadeep. The Trust has prepared 1080 Shwant Rangadeeps for this festival. Every evening 108 Rangadeeps would be offered.

For all the 9 days Hawan-Vidhi would be carried out from Sunrise to Sunset. The Hawan would start with recitation of ‘Swahakar Mantra’. ‘Shubhankar Stotra’ and ‘Ashubhankar Stotra’ would further be recited throughout the day.

As P. P. Sadguru Bapu has already informed us through His earlier discourses that this is the Utsav (festival) of his mother and He has invited all of us for this Utsav. Also while taking darshan Bapu has asked all of us to keep bhav (feeling) and love in our mind that this Goddess Mahishasurmardini is Mother of our Beloved Bapu.

So do come and take the advantage of it to the maximum without giving it a miss.
